Netflix’s web series ‘Yeh Kaali Kaali Aankhen’ is based on William Shakespeare’s “For She Head Eyes and Choses” by Othello Frege. This web series has been made keeping the politics of Uttar Pradesh in the center, directed by Siddharth Sengupta. The title of the web series has been taken from the famous song ‘Yeh Kali Kali Aankhe’ from Shahrukh Khan’s film ‘Baazigar’.
This web series starts from a small town in UP where leader Akhiraj (Saurabh Shukla) is corrupt, bloody and greedy for votes, doing all that villains of films do. Akhiraj’s life resides in daughter Poorva (Aanchal Singh). The story revolves around three important characters Vikrant (Tahir Raj Bhasin), Shikha (Shweta Tripathi) and Poorva (Aanchal). Vikrant is the son of Akhiraj’s bookkeeper (Brajendra Kala). Seeing Vikrant at the age of just 7 years old, Poorva, who is studying in his school, gives heart, but Vikrant did not like Poorva from the beginning, he considers her as the reward of his life. As a child, Vikrant is somehow left behind by Poorva because she goes abroad to study. But the story takes a new turn when Vikrant becomes an engineer and his life starts coming back on track. In college, Vikrant falls in love with Shikha at first sight. Vikrant dreams of having a medium family. He wants to make his life with Shikha in a small house. In the midst of this small dream of Vikrant, after 15 years, suddenly there is an entry of Poorva with eccentric love. Poorva can go to any extent to marry Vikrant and Vikrant tries to avoid all this. The love of the leader’s daughter and Vikrant’s one does not work in front of the powerful.
“Will you be our friend..? Hamara naam Vikrant Singh Chauhan, date of birth December 19, date of death probably aaj hi marenge…” The series begins with a scene of Vikrant (Tahir Raj Bhasin) covered in blood in a room amid heavy gunfire. This story moves forward with politics, money, power. The audience gets to see the thrill, thriller as well as the hideous game of power. The author has once again reiterated the concept of 90s films where the madness of love with markat, bloody game is seen.
Tahir Raj Bhasin has appeared in three films back to back. Tahir Raj Bhasin has got a chance in ’83’, ‘Ranjish Hi Sahi’ and the upcoming ‘Loop Lapeta’. In ‘Yeh Kaali Kaali Aankhen’, Tahir is seen constantly trying to prove himself. Its effect is seen on his acting. Despite this, he tries to do complete justice to his character. In some places, these expressions from his face seem a bit faint, which he tries to handle equally. If the directors could hone his talent on screen a little more, he would have looked more amazing. Shweta Tripathi is known for her strong acting. Once again she looks like ‘Golu’ of ‘Mirzapur’. The same tricks of his look and acting have been seen. Aanchal Singh, Saurabh Shukla and Brijendra Kala have done the best work in this series.
Aanchal Singh has got a heavy and strong role in ‘Yeh Kali Kali Aankhen’. She seems to be doing full justice to her character with strong personality and bold acts as per the need of the story. Aanchal is the strongest link in this series, which she has played very well.
Siddharth Sengupta, director of popular shows like ‘Balika Vadhu’ has directed ‘Yeh Kali Kali Aankhe’. He has previously directed web series like Alt Balaji’s ‘Andekhi’ and ‘Apharan’. This is a big project for him which has been released on Netflix. He has written the story of ‘Yeh Kali Kali Aankhe’ along with Anahata Menon and Varun Badola. The style of the small screen is seen in the script and direction of the story. The director has tried his best to tie every episode but at many places it tends to slacken and some scenes seem unwelcome.
This web series released on Netflix increases the expectations of the audience. Artists like Saurabh Shukla, Tahir Raj, Brijendra Kala and Shweta Tripathi double the expectations. The cocktail of politics, crime and thrill of this web series is not able to compete with ‘Mirzapur’ present on Amazon Prime.
This web series of Tahir Raj and Shweta Tripathi is reminiscent of the films of the 90s in which the makers have added OTT spice. If you are a fan of 90s Bollywood thrillers then you will definitely love Yeh Kaali Kali Aankhen.
In this series, the audience easily gets the dose of the 90s but the songs of that era are not heard. There are definitely some songs in the web series which fail to captivate the audience. The biggest drawback of this series was that the emotional scenes could not make it emotional. Nothing like this would have happened if the director would have thought that the audience would cry after seeing the scenes or get angry. Despite the hard work of all the actors and the understanding of the director, this web series overall proves to be average.
