The baby gets nutrition through blood. When the sugar level in the mother’s body is high, the baby stores the extra sugar as fat. Due to this its size can be much bigger than normal. Due to which many types of problems start arising in the child. Like mineral deficiency, jaundice, delivery before 9 months, breathing problems after birth. Apart from this, the problem of obesity and diabetes is the most common.
So what does research say?
The research was carried out at the University of Turku and Turku University Hospital. Which has been published in the European Journal of Nutrition. The study found that dietary habits have an effect on both obesity and the onset of gestational diabetes in pregnant women.
How was the study done?
The mother-child study examined the association between dietary intake and the onset of gestational diabetes in 351 overweight or obese women. The researchers calculated the women’s nutrient intakes from their food diaries, which recognized two dietary patterns, one healthy and one unhealthy.
After which the results came out that if a nutritious diet is consumed in the early stages of pregnancy, the risk of diabetes can be reduced.
“Our research results suggest that following a healthy diet in early pregnancy is associated with a reduced risk of gestational diabetes,” said Lotta Pajunen, a doctoral candidate from the Institute of Biomedicine at the University of Turku.
