New York
An Indian-origin Sikh taxi driver who was attacked in the US has said he is “shocked and angry” at the attack on him. The driver said that no one should have to face such hate-filled violence. A few days ago a Sikh taxi driver was attacked by an unidentified man at the John F Kennedy (JFK) airport and asked him to “return to his country”.

The Sikh Coalition, a community-based civil and human rights organization, said in a statement on January 3 that Singh, a resident of New York City, was attacked and beaten up near his cab at JFK International Airport here. The organization said in its statement that Singh had parked his cab at Terminal 4 taxi stand. Then another driver stopped his vehicle. When Singh made a passenger sit in his car and asked the other driver to proceed, the other driver tried to hit Singh through the door of his car.

‘Go back to your country’
He then started punching Singh repeatedly on the head, chest and arms. According to the statement, the second driver called Singh ‘turbaned’ and he was shouting, ‘Go back to your country’. The organization quoted the victim of the attack, the Sikh taxi driver, as saying, “I was shocked and angry that I was attacked for doing nothing but doing my job.” No one should experience such hatred while working. I hope the police will identify the person and arrest him and register a case against him.

The organization addressed the Sikh taxi driver only as ‘Shri Singh’ upon request not to be named. Singh lodged a report with the Port Authority Police Department (PAPD) soon after the incident. Amrit Kaur Aakre, legal director of the Sikh Coalition, said, “We sincerely hope that prejudice will be considered as a factor in this outrageous attack, which is evidence of what the other driver said and did to Mr. Singh. ‘ Navjot Pal Kaur posted the 26-second video of the attack on Twitter on January 4 and it soon went viral.

Terms attack ‘extremely disturbing’
Kaur tweeted, ‘This video was made by a man at John F Kennedy International Airport. I do not own the rights to this video. The Consulate General of India in New York termed the attack on the Sikh taxi driver as “extremely disturbing” and said the matter was taken up with US authorities and urged them to investigate the incident. The US State Department also said it was “deeply disturbed” by reports of an attack on a Sikh cab driver at JFK International Airport in the video.
