Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has inaugurated the Skardu International Airport in Gilgit-Baltistan, 155 km from Srinagar, India. The airport in Skardu was previously only operational for domestic flights. On December 2, Pakistan upgraded its status and declared it an international airport. The Pakistani Air Force already uses this airport as a forward airbase against India. Pakistan has also deployed a squadron of JF-17 fighter jets at this airbase.

How Gilgit-Baltistan came under Pakistan’s possession
During the partition of the country in 1947, the Gilgit-Baltistan region was neither a part of India nor of Pakistan. In 1935, Britain leased this part to Gilgit Agency for 60 years, but the British canceled this lease on August 1, 1947 and returned the area to Maharaja Hari Singh of Jammu and Kashmir.
