Employees have found a ‘time capsule’ enclosed in a copper box under the base of a statue in the US. This time capsule is 130 years old. This is the second time capsule found during excavation from this site. Virginia Governor Ralph Northam announced the meeting on this time capsule by tweeting. He said, ‘They’ve got it. This is the time capsule that everyone was looking for.
Ralph said conservationists are studying what to do next. It is expected that it will be opened soon. According to an 1887 article, a time capsule was hidden under a statue of General Robert E. Lee. General Robert led the Army of Northern Virginia during the Civil War. This time capsule contains buttons, currency, maps, rare pictures of Abraham Lincoln in his coffin and tablets.
Lee’s statue came under attack after George Floyd’s death
A shoe box-shaped time capsule was found during excavations at the base of the statue. The governor has also posted a picture of the copper box in his tweet. This statue of General Robert is in the Richmond area of Virginia City, which was the capital of the South during the conflict that lasted from 1861-65. This statue was torn down. Three books, a photo and a coin were found in the time capsule found earlier.
It is believed that the first time capsule was a memorabilia which was kept by some of the workers working there. The new time capsule received on Monday is almost double in size. The governor said that conservationists will study it and it will be opened soon. After the death of George Floyd last year, Lee’s statue came under attack from protesters demanding racial justice. Lee had supported the perpetuation of slavery.
