On 8 July 2021, Zika virus (ZIKV) infection was confirmed in a resident of Kerala, South India. This was the first case of Zika virus disease in India. The virus has been detected through RT-PCR test (RT-PCR) at National Institute of Virology (NIV) Pune.

On 31 July 2021, the first Zika virus case was confirmed from Belsar district of Maharashtra. Recently, more than 25 people were found positive for Zika in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. Kanpur city has now emerged as a hotspot for the virus. The total number of cases here has gone up to 66.

The Health Department has been put on alert amid rising cases of Zika. According to health experts, the case of Zika virus has increased the problems amid increasing cases of corona and dengue. It can be difficult for patients to differentiate between these three diseases. In such a situation, due to not getting timely diagnosis of the disease, there is a fear of worsening of the condition.

How does the Zika virus spread?

In most cases, the Zika virus is caused by the bite of an Aedes mosquito. These mosquitoes are mostly active during the day and can also transmit other diseases like dengue, chikungunya and malaria. Apart from this, it can also be spread through sexual contact with an infected person and possibly through blood donation. Also, this virus can enter from an infected mother to her newborn child or fetus.

Main symptoms of Zika virus

These are the major symptoms which have been found in people and usually last for 2-7 days –

mild to high fever
rashes
eye pain
muscle and joint pain
Headache
nausea and vomiting

All these symptoms are also found in dengue and malaria patients. Therefore, it is difficult to differentiate between these diseases.

What are the ways to avoid Zika virus?

The best way to avoid Zika virus is to avoid mosquitoes. Avoid mosquito bites indoors and out, especially in the morning and evening. Mosquitoes are more active during this time.

Measures to avoid mosquitoes:

Use mosquito repellants.
Wear a long-sleeved shirt and long pants.
Keep windows closed in the morning and evening.
Be sure to use a mosquito net.

Other ways to avoid Zika virus:

Use a condom during sex if you live in an area with Zika virus. Continue to do this for at least 8 weeks, even if the number of cases is less. This will prevent the infection from spreading through sexual relations.

If symptoms are observed, condoms should be used for six months after infection.

Travelers returning from Zika affected areas should not donate blood for 28 days. This will not spread the infection.
